Create APA 7 and Chicago 18 Citations in Microsoft Word with Mendeley Cite (PC & Mac)

By Erin Wright

This tutorial shows how to create APA 7 and Chicago 18 citations in Microsoft Word using the free Mendeley Cite add-in. These steps can also be used for several other citation styles that aren’t currently available in Word.

First, we will install the Mendeley Cite add-in. Then, we will select the citation style. Next, we will add a source citation to our Word document. Finally, we will remove the Mendeley Cite add-in from Word.

All the steps listed here are demonstrated in real-time on my YouTube channel:

Important Note: These steps are for Word for Microsoft 365 on PC and Mac (a.k.a., Word for Mac). These steps don’t apply to older desktop versions of Word, Word for the web, or Word for mobile.

How to Install Mendeley Cite

  1. Select References in the Microsoft Word ribbon.
  2. Select Change Provider in the Citations & Bibliography group.
  3. Select Mendeley Cite from the drop-down menu.
  4. Select Add in the Mendeley Cite dialog box.
  5. Select Continue in the License terms and Privacy dialog box.
  6. Select the Get Started button.
  7. Enter your email into the Welcome dialog box.
  8. Enter your name and new password into the Register dialog box.
  9. Select the Register button.

The Mendeley Cite pane should open automatically in Word.

Important Note: If your version of Word doesn’t have the Change Provider button, you can download the Mendeley Cite add-in from the Microsoft AppSource.

How to Change Citation Styles in Mendeley Cite

  1. Select Citation Settings in the Mendeley Cite Pane.
  2. Select the Change citation style button.
  3. Choose American Psychological Association 7th edition, Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition (author-date), or another style option.

Select Search for another style if you don’t see the option you are looking for.

  1. Select the Update citation style button.

How to Add Citations from Mendeley Cite

To add a citation from Mendeley Cite, you must first add the reference to your Mendeley web library. This section only covers the basic steps for this process; we will cover this topic in more detail in a separate tutorial.

  1. Select the References tab in the Mendeley Cite pane.
  2. Select the Go to Mendeley web library button.
  3. Select the Add references button in the Mendeley Reference Manager window.
  4. Select Import file(s) from the drop-down menu.
  5. Locate and select the file(s) in the Open dialog box.
  6. Select the Open button.
  7. Select the uploaded file name.
  8. Enter any necessary information that did not automatically populate in the Info pane.
  9. Return to your Word document.
  10. Select the Sync button in the Mendeley Cite pane if the reference doesn’t appear automatically.
  11. Place your cursor in the text where you want to insert the citation.
Pro Tip: Ensure you have a blank space before your cursor and that your cursor is to the left of the period.
  1. Select the reference in the Mendeley Cite pane.
  2. Select the Insert citation button.

The citation should now appear in your document with a content control box around it.

  1. Click outside of the box to deselect the citation.

To add more references to your library, return to the Mendeley Reference Manager window. If you have closed that window, you can open it again in a web browser at https://www.mendeley.com/reference-manager/library/all-references.

How to Remove Mendeley Cite

PC Steps

  1. Select the References tab in Microsoft Word.
  2. Select Change Provider in the Citations & Bibliography group.
  3. Select Microsoft Word from the drop-down menu.
  4. Right-click the Mendeley Cite button, which moved to the right end of the ribbon.
  5. Select Remove Add-in from the drop-down menu.
  6. Select Yes in the Remove Add-in alert box.

Mac Steps

  1. Select Insert in the menu bar.
  2. Select Add-ins from the drop-down menu.
  3.  Select My Add-ins from the submen.
  4. Select the three-dot menu to the right of Mendeley Cite in the Office Add-ins dialog box.
  5. Select Remove from the drop-down menu.
  6. Select Remove in the dialog box asking if you want to remove the add-in.
  7. Close the Office Add-ins dialog box.

Mendeley Cite should now be removed from the ribbon. However, removing it from the ribbon does not delete your Mendeley account or reference library.
