Microsoft Word includes twenty-seven special characters. Of those, the three most popular (or at least the ones I receive the most questions about) are the copyright, trademark, and registered symbols. So, today’s tutorial shows three ways to insert copyright, trademark, and registered symbols in Microsoft Word.
First, we’ll use the Symbol dialog box. Then, we’ll use keyboard shortcuts. Finally, we’ll use the AutoCorrect feature.
Please visit my previous tutorial “How to Insert Special Characters in Microsoft Word” for step-by-step instructions on inserting all twenty-seven special characters.
This tutorial is also available as a YouTube video showing all the steps in real time.

These steps are for Word for Office 365, Word 2019, and Word 2016. The steps are similar for Word 2013 and Word 2010.
The Symbol Dialog Box Method
Copyright, trademark, and registered symbols can be inserted using the Symbol dialog box.
1. Place your cursor where the symbol should be inserted in your text.
2. Select the Insert tab.
3. Select Symbol in the Symbols group.
4. Select More Symbols in the drop-down menu.
5. Select the Special Characters tab in the Symbol dialog box.
6. Select Copyright, Registered, or Trademark.
7. Select the Insert button.
8. Select the Close button to close the Symbol dialog box.
The Keyboard Shortcut Method
If you’re working on a PC, you can use the following keyboard shortcuts to insert copyright, trademark, and registered symbols.
1. Place your cursor where the symbol should be inserted.
2. Select the appropriate key combination:
Copyright: Alt + Ctrl + C
Trademark: Alt + Ctrl + T
Registered: Alt + Ctrl + R
The AutoCorrect Method
Word’s AutoCorrect feature lets you insert the copyright, trademark, and registered symbols by typing parentheses and specific lowercased letters directly into your text.
1. Place your cursor where the symbol should be inserted.
2. Type the appropriate key combination:
Copyright: (c)
Registered: (r)
Trademark: (tm)
Pro Tip: If AutoCorrect doesn’t insert the symbol into your text, ensure AutoCorrect is turned on by going to the File tab and selecting Options in the Backstage view followed by Proofing and AutoCorrect Options. Watch this blog for an upcoming tutorial on customizing Word’s AutoCorrect features.
